Overdosage

BACK TO MAIN PAGE

Symptoms:

Buprenorphine appears to have a wide margin of safety because of its partial opioid agonist/antagonist properties. In the event of accidental overdose, the cardiac and respiratory status of the patient should be monitored closely and appropriate supportive measures used.

Treatment:

Symptomatic treatment of respiratory depression, following standard intensive care measures, should be performed. If an opioid antagonist (ie, naloxone) is used, the long duration of action of buprenorphine should be taken into consideration.
